- RETIRING. Pete Rozelle, 63, commissioner of the National
- Football League since 1960; in Palm Desert, Calif. "I want to
- get some fun out of the rest of my life," sighed Rozelle, former
- Los Angeles Rams general manager who piloted what was once a
- twelve-team football league with its offices in a bank in a
- Philadelphia suburb into an alliance with the TV networks to
- produce today's 28-team, billion-dollar behemoth. Rozelle
- admitted he had been worn down by the N.F.L.'s legal battles
- with the now defunct U.S.F.L. and by the players' strikes in
- 1982 and 1987.
