  4.     RETIRING. Pete Rozelle, 63, commissioner of the National
  5. Football League since 1960; in Palm Desert, Calif. "I want to
  6. get some fun out of the rest of my life," sighed Rozelle, former
  7. Los Angeles Rams general manager who piloted what was once a
  8. twelve-team football league with its offices in a bank in a
  9. Philadelphia suburb into an alliance with the TV networks to
  10. produce today's 28-team, billion-dollar behemoth. Rozelle
  11. admitted he had been worn down by the N.F.L.'s legal battles
  12. with the now defunct U.S.F.L. and by the players' strikes in
  13. 1982 and 1987.
